Entropy meets Enterprise: Chad Cogdill
Published: Tuesday, January 11, 2011
Chad Cogdill's photography is an excellent fit for the location in which it's being shown ... not because method. (yes, the period is part of the name) is a clothing store which shows art, but because it's situated right where Downtown meets the East Crossroads.
Both areas are live music hotspots. Both are loaded with small, colorful detail. And both have seen their share of decline and renewal in recent years, and Cogdill has been there to capture all of it on camera.
Based out of downtown Kansas City, the urban landscape has been the primary subject matter for my photos, he writes. I expose the fine details of the urban decay and reconstruction that are typically overlooked by the masses.
Two words in that short statement set Cogdill apart.
It's one thing (and an entirely valid thing, I hasten to add) to focus solely on how things fall apart. It's another to acknowledge and chronicle the new puttings-together as well as the sad beauties of entropy.
Whether he's juxtaposing past and present or shooting a close-up of a soundboard or store window, Cogdill (who is also a portraitist and event photographer) works with a keen eye toward color, line and composition. His work is stylish, in the sense that connotes establishing its own stylee ... which, obviously, makes it an ideal fit for its specific venue as well.
